Most people will need restorative treatment at some point in their lives. One of our common restorations at Point Loma Family Dentistry is a dental crown. Modern dental crown procedures are safer, quicker, and more effective. Advanced techniques and innovative technology have led to the advent of Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic or CEREC same-day crowns, transforming restorative treatments.
The conventional crowns typically involve a lengthy process spread throughout several appointments. We recognize the fact that most of our patients have busy lives, so we offer specialized CEREC same-day dental crowns. CEREC crowns are made possible by computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM).
The CEREC system enables us to prepare your tooth and design a fine-looking porcelain crown all within a single day. After the tooth is reshaped, we make use of an intraoral camera and CEREC software to create a digital impression and design your crown. The digital design process ensures an accurate and comfortable fit when combined with our precise Chairside milling unit.
The CEREC procedure begins with the dentist preparing the tooth. We use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and reduce pain before reshaping the enamel. Sedatives can be used to provide a more comfortable experience.
Once you are numb, a sanding instrument is used to remove a portion of the enamel. While all efforts are made to retain as much healthy enamel as possible, the tooth must be entirely reshaped to accommodate the newly designed crown.
After the tooth is reshaped, we will take an impression of its new size. The CEREC imaging process involves using an intraoral scanner, which captures hundreds of pictures of your mouth in a matter of seconds. The CEREC software then converts these images into a single, three-dimensional representation of your teeth and gums.
Next, we use digital illustrations to design your new crown. Once we are completely satisfied with the design, we will begin the construction process. The digital images of your new crown will be passed on to our CEREC milling unit. A beautiful and well-fitting crown that matches the exact dimensions of our digital design is prepared in the milling unit using a single block of porcelain.
Once your crown is ready, we will polish the porcelain until it matches the sparkle of your smile. Before we cement the crown to your tooth, we will check the margins of your new restoration. If necessary, we will make some minor adjustments to ensure a proper fit. In the end, if everything is found to be satisfactory, we will permanently fix your crown into position using a powerful adhesive.
